going grey is financially rewarding and makes ecosense!

Apparently 8% of men do not know the real haircolour of their wifes…  approximately 70% of women and up to 30% of men in Australia dye their hair regularly. Consider the amount of chemicals going down the drain every day in large parts of the world! And not to mention the potential health risks associated with chemicals in hairdyes like amonia and peroxide. BUT there is a new move to embrace ones natural appearance spearheaded by well known and beautiful looking Hellen Mirren and model Kristen McMenamy who decided to stop dying her hair at 40 (she is born in 1967) and is still in professional demand despite her decision to go against the tide. She recently modelled in a campaign by ID magazine with sub-title: conforming is boring.

Why not save money and time, do something good for the planet at the same time? It’s so easy, just dare to go grey!

For more information and ideas check out two American resources, unfortunately I am not aware of any Australian versions yet. Please let me know if you are!

  • Lobke Rose:

Always wondered why people are so obsessed with the hair dye ‘thing’. Many women actually look so wrong/old with a too dark colour trying to look like they did in their twenties. Weird as!

  • indeed! some hairdressers (together with the woman in question) have a lot to answer for!

  • as i sit here i’m covered in goop to strip my hair back from artificial colour to its natural salt and pepper. i may have to hide in my house for a month if the peroxide gives me a complete marilyn with the peroxide!
my mother went grey at 19 but i grew up never once seeing it in its natural colour. she died when i was 32 so for 32 years she spent time, dollars and effort keeping her hair an artificial colour.
i’m now going to go and stay grey. i earned these grey hairs and i’m proud of them. long live grey pride!

  • good on you! there is a lot of pressure on people to look younger than they are to compete and it is about time that we push back a bit and put other opinions and options out there!!
