Workshop 05 business and human rights
Why is the protection of human rights relevant to business and not simply the responsibility of governments alone?
This interactive workshop provided a basic introduction to human rights, international law, the United Nations system, relevant codes and examples of industry specific initiatives relating to human rights. Further, the workshop provided relevant examples of business initiatives promoting human rights and discussed the challenges, lessons learned and some of the results achieved.
One of the foremost authorities on human rights, Prof. Brian Burdekin AO, was one of the main speakers. He was joined by panelists from leading corporations, government and civil society.
Numbers were limited to a maximum of 30 participants to ensure each participant had adequate time to interact with speakers and other participants. In addition, participants received a workbook and compilation of relevant materials on a CD Rom for reference.
This workshop was held on 11 December 2009 in Sydney, NSW.
